World AIDS Day: Raising Awareness and Combating the HIV/AIDS Epidemic
World AIDS Day is observed on December 1st each year to raise awareness about the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
It's an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS, to show support for people living with HIV/AIDS, and to commemorate those who have died from the disease.
The first World AIDS Day was held in 1988. It was created by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and to encourage progress in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.
HIV/AIDS Prevention:
Using condoms consistently and correctly. Condoms are the most effective way to prevent HIV transmission during sexual intercourse.
Not sharing needles or syringes
Sharing needles or syringes is a major risk factor for HIV transmission.
Getting tested for HIV
The earlier a person is diagnosed with HIV, the sooner they can get treatment and prevent the virus from progressing to AIDS.
Taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
PrEP is a daily pill that can be taken by people who are at high risk of contracting HIV to prevent the virus from infecting them.
People with HIV/AIDS often face discrimination in employment, housing, and healthcare. This can have a negative impact on their physical and mental health.
World AIDS Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and to combat stigma and discrimination.
